Unable to marry in Afghanistan, Golnesa and Golmammad flee to Iran, where they find work in a traditional brick-making kiln. When the foreman gives them lodgings on the grounds, Golmammad suspects ulterior motives and bans Golnesa from leaving the house. A prisoner in her own home, Golnesa begins to realize she has traded one life of oppression for another.
