In 1984, renowned photographer Co Rentmeester made a portrait of Michael Jordan for LIFE magazine, which showed the rising star performing a “gran jeté” ballet leap with the ball in his left hand.
When the image was published, Nike solicited a transparency copy from Rentmeester “for research purposes only” and paid him $150. Months later, Rentmeester discovered that Nike had reproduced its own version with Jordan wearing his endorsed apparel, copying the original pose and elements expressed in his photo.
Art director Peter Moore designed the iconic Jumpman logo from it, and Rentmeester never received credit. His portrait of Jordan has been called “The Billion Dollar Photo” and named one of the 100 Most Influential Photos of All Time by Time, Inc.
