The Red Turtle is a beautifully animated, dialogue-free drama. A magical realism story of how a dead red turtle transforms into a human woman, who becomes the mate of the very man who caused the turtle’s death.
A man, stranded on an island, attempts to escape on a raft only to be thwarted by a large red turtle. In anger he kills the turtle only to repent the act and attempts to save it, but too late. The turtle magically transforms into a human woman and they develop a life-long loving relationship.
This collaboration between first-time feature director Michael Dudok de Wit and Japan’s storied Studio Ghibli has themes of empathy and love, as well as strong messages about the importance of companionship and family.
